What's Happened to Golf Clothing?

0 comments — posted 2012 May by Guy Gladue

When I was coming up with the idea and concepts for Golf Cult I spent a lot of time looking at other golf apparel companies from the big boys in Golf to the smaller brands.  The first thing I noticed is that everything was pretty much the same across the board, same style of shirts, same fabrics and of course the same colours.  There were only a 3 companies at the time that we attempting to do anything different and only 1 other company that I would say is along the same lines as Golf Cult Clothing.  This of course made me excited about my new venture as it meant I would stick out like the sore thumb I wanted to be.

In the following year and up to 2010 I noticed several new golf companies were showing up with fresh new looks, fabrics and colours.  Blogs about golf fashions started popping up as well as media segments on the so called changing face of golf.  Anyone who attended the 2010 PGA Golf show were also commenting on this apparel shift.  A few of these new brands started "borrowing" some ideas from Golf Cult, like full print back pieces and larger font script graphics,   This was pointed out to me by clients and golf bloggers alike.  Imitation is the purest form of flattery they say, I say get your own ideas biters!!

My thoughts on this were mixed, on one hand I loved that golf was changing, this was not our fathers golf course, game and style.  On the other hand I knew competition was ramping up and market share for the fringe golf brands would be expanding. It wasn't long before the big brands took note and started catering to a new youth market.  Some of the new brands exploded into the mainstream, being picked up by major retailers and higher end pro shops.

So let's forget the past and start talking about 2012, what the heck happened?  I could pull screen grabs from all the large golf retailers and golf brands big and small and it would literally look like they were all the same brand.  Some of the smaller brands that started when Golf Cult did have grown into large golf brands and I notice they do not have the same edge to them as they once did.  This is not a criticism of any company, I say what ever makes you the most money is the route you should take as this is a business. This is just an observation and I must say a kind of a disappointing one.  Does golf truly only have one style and any other brand be considered novelty?

The Tiger Hunt is Back!

The hype-train is rolling full steam for Tiger Woods and the comeback watch is on.  Tiger is not quite ready to be the best player in Golf, but the notion that he is completely finished is exaggerated.  Sure Pebble was beat down on Sunday but slowly and surely seeing Tiger back on Sunday is exciting and makes for better ratings on the TUBE.  Love him or hate him, everyone loves a come back story as much as they love to see someone go down in flames.

I look forward to seeing Tiger Woods play at the Honda Classic in the coming weeks as announced on his website. http://bit.ly/vZ3WvS

Golf Cult is Headed to Bermuda!

Here we come Bermuda, ready for the hot sun, dark and stormy drinks,  pink sandy beaches and of course the golf.  This is a tiny 23 mile island and they manage to maintain no less than 8 golf courses which I find amazing.  Have a look at the pic from the 1930's.  A couple of chaps in their whites enjoying a round with that great view, I wonder what Golf Cult would have looked like in the 1930's Hmmmmm.  Enjoy your week everybody!  Don't forget to SHOP for Dad.

Happy May 2-4 Weekend Canada

Well they call it the official kick off to the summer of long weekends, complete with traffic jams, colder than average temps and more rain than we normally see in 2 months falling in 2 weeks.  Weather aside, we usually avoid the long weekend rounds of golf because the courses are busier than loud mouth golf pants and the balls come flying at you in all directions.  Instead we'll be grilling a lot of steak, drinking a few pints, cranking the tunes and enjoying this long weekend with friends and family.  Enjoy your long weekend my fellow Canucks!!

$500 Million Floating Golf Course

Wow this is amazing a floating golf course complete with under water tunnels to get you to other holes!  Maybe this is what I need to get my mind off the fear of hitting the ball when I see water.  Will boats replace golf carts?  Check it out here http://goo.gl/foYuR

The 17th at TPC Sawgrass = Pure Drama!

The TPC Sawgrass is a personal fave of mine, it's an ego-shattering 137-yard, par-3 menace.  This hole is an island that is surrounded by water, thousands of golf balls and a few dozen putters.  I have had the privilege of playing this course, in a heat filled day of misery and bliss all rolled up into one big burrito with beer on the side.
Watching this tourny is also a fave, it's pure drama for the pro's as this hole has sunk a few players careers and made a great day bad and a bad day worse.  The TPC @ Sawgrass we salute you!

****DRAMA UPDATE: Tiger Woods withdraws from the TPA SawGrass after 9 holes, this is the second straight year that Tiger has withdrawn from The Players.  Where is the drama you say?  Tiger Woods had a triple bogey on the fourth hole.

Golf Balls That Only Fly Straight

Is your golf nickname Sir Shank-a-lot? How about The Slicer-Dicer? Do narrow fairways make you wince and cry in the fetal position?Look no further duffers, there is hope for you yet, the Polara Golf Ball are guaranteed not to slice. The science behind this is the two different patterns of ball dimples. Oh, but I should mention this balls is not legal for sanctioned tourney play, so keep it on the DL.

Welcome to the new home of Golf Cult clothing, I hope you like the look and products on the new site.  Along with some new designs and shirt styles we have added a new brand alliance that that completely compliment us; Dirty Dog Canada.  Not only do they have the coolest name in Sunglasses but the style are pretty awesome and as you can see from some of our model photos they compliment Golf Cult to a "tee".
We welcome all and any feedback on the new site, designs and latest additions and look for many more surprises in the coming months as we quickly approach the 2011 Golf season.  Oh yeah we have to get through this looooooong Canadian winter first.

About this blog, aside from the usual what's new updates, I want to add some interesting articles that compliment our small business journey and include some lifestyle contributions as well.  Golf to us is about enjoying the outdoors, having fun with friends and family, challenging yourself to be a better golfer and of course enjoying the 19th hole or apres-golf.  To toast that special time we will be including some of our favorite food and drink recipes.

I hope you can enjoy Golf Cult Clothing and the ride as much as we do!
